An Introduction to Hydrological Modelling with Python

BUETAAA organized a seminar on "An Introduction to Hydrological Modelling with Python" on March 19, 2022. The webinar was presented by Dr. Andrew Ireson, Associate Professor, University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Abstract

Hydrological models are used to simulate streamflow, soil moisture, groundwater and other hydrological processes, and can be useful for understanding and predicting how hydrological systems work. The python language is well suited to hydrological data analysis and plotting, but also can be very powerful for building hydrological models. Python is open source, so can be freely obtained, and run on any computer operating system. In this seminar I will introduce students to the python language, demonstrate how to build a very simple hydrological model, and demonstrate how to run/calibrate a model sophisticated hydrological model. I will share the scripts and data with students afterwards so they can run the model on their own computers.

Speaker's Bio

Andrew Ireson is a subsurface hydrologist - his research focuses combining field observations with models to conceptualize and quantify the processes that determine the storage and movement of water and contaminants in the subsurface environment.

Andrew uses python every day for data analysis, modelling and plotting. He teaches numerical methods using python. Python is his favorite language because of it’s relative simplicity, extremely broad capabilities, and open source community support/development. Andrew received his PhD in hydrology from Imperial College London in 2008, and moved to Saskatchewan in 2011 to take up a position as a faculty member in the Global Institute for Water Security.
