An overview of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation

BUETAAA is organized a webinar on "An overview of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation" on May 15, 2022. The webinar was presented by Khademul Islam, a registered Professional Engineer and one of the Directors of Inspection (Statutory) in the Government of Alberta.

Abstract

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) deals with all aspects of physical, mental, and social health and safety in a workplace. It is clearly unacceptable for any professional to be killed or seriously injured, or to suffer mental or physical illness because of their occupation or related activities. In this presentation, three parts of the Alberta OHS legislation will be discussed- the Act, the Regulation and the Code. This presentation will also cover recent changes made to Alberta OHS Act and Regulation and the proposed changes to the Code.

Knowledge of OHS is very important for every professional, including recent graduates/graduate students who will be entering their career phase soon. Your understanding of the principles of OHS and knowing your rights at the workplace will prepare you well for the future occupation. If you are an engineering graduate, you will need to have a minimum knowledge of OHS to pass the National Professional Practice Examination of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
